Letter: Las Vegans get prison sentence

Tuesday, March 19, 2002 | 8:57 a.m.

Several points by George Grafton's March 15 letter, "Nevada can solve nuclear challenge," raise serious suspicion as to his naivete and subsequent perspective.

Believing in the almighty dollar and the conclusions drawn by Secretary of Energy Spencer Abraham, Mr. Grafton sees Nevada as the solution to nuclear waste "scattered across the country."

"Scattered" is far more indicative of a train wreck, terrorist attack, or a one hundred car pile-up (as seen in Ringgold, Ga., last week) than of nuclear waste contained in storage facilities at the same location as it was expended.

It is much more than a situation to be resolved with an annual paycheck: it is a prison sentence (for those who choose to remain in Las Vegas) with no foreseeable parole and a strong likelihood of future penalties.
