Cash awards offered to student winners
Students in grades 4-12 are invited to enter a poetry contest sponsored by Creative Communication that offers $2,000 to the winning poets and $500 in grants to schools.
The contest consists of three divisions: Grades 4-6, 7-9 and 10-12. There are no entry fees or required purchases to enter or to be published in the anthology created from the contest.
The contest deadline is April 5. Two groups plan party, health session
MountainView Senior Friends will hold their St. Patrick's Day celebration 1:30-3 p.m. Wednesday in the Dallas Ballroom at Texas Station, featuring games, entertainment and refreshments.

Also Sunrise Senior Friends, 3101 S. Maryland Parkway, Suite 314, presents "Aging and Hearing Loss -- Hand In Hand?" 1:30-3 p.m. Thursday. The program features Dr. Timothy Tolan, a specialist in otolaryngology, and audiologist Sue Narby, who will explain how and why so many people lose their hearing as they age.
American Parkinson's Disease Association
Support Group will meet with Parkinson's patients, their caregivers and family members at 1 p.m. Thursday at Green Valley Presbyterian Church, 1798 Wigwam, Henderson. For more information, call 464-3132.
BLM seeking nominations for posts
The Bureau of Land Management is asking for nominations to fill positions on three Resource Advisory Councils in Nevada.
The nomination process will remain open until the close of business on April 22, Bob Abbey, BLM state director, said.
The positions for appointment on the Mojave-Southern Great Basin RAC include one representative of the livestock industry holding a BLM grazing permit, a representative of dispersed recreation, a member of the general public, a representative of transportation and rights-of-way, and a representative of a state agency.
Nominations should be sent to the Las Vegas Field Office, 4701 North Torrey Pine Drive, Las Vegas, NV 89130-2301.
Sculptor to be chosen for D.C. statue
A six-member committee of Nevadans will choose a sculptor and oversee the creation and placement of a statue of Sarah Winnemucca in the U.S. Capitol.
Assemblywoman Marcia de Braga, D-Fallon, sponsored the bill designating a statue in honor of Winnemucca, a Northern Nevada Paiute woman who worked for peace between Indians and settlers in the 19th century.
The committee members are: first lady Dema Guinn; Carrie Porter, Nevada Women's History Project state president; Debbie Allen, Fallon teacher; Richard Hooker, Las Vegas Cultural and Community Affairs; Mary Lee Fulkerson, Reno artist; and Steven High of the Nevada Museum of Art, Reno.
