Tuesday, March 19, 2002 | 10 a.m.

The American Bowling Congress championships and national convention will be staged in Las Vegas in 2009, organizers said today.

The event, which is expected to bring more than 125,000 bowlers to the city over a six-month period, is expected to have a nongaming economic impact of more than $100 million on the city.

Las Vegas Events, which works with the Las Vegas Convention and Visitors Authority to coordinate special events in the city, announced that the event would be conducted at Cashman Center, which will be transformed into a 60-lane bowling center for the tournament.

ABC, based in Greendale, Wis., conducts its national tournament in Reno every third year and rotates to other cities the other two years. The tournament is in Billings, Mont., this year and Knoxville, Tenn., in 2003, and will return to Reno in 2004.

The ABC staged its national tournament at Cashman Center in 1986, an event that drew a then-record 10,019 five-member teams.
