Thursday, March 14, 2002 | 10:12 a.m.
BOYS FIRST TEAM
C.J. WATSON, PG, Bishop Gorman, 6-2, Sr.
Noteworthy: Nevada's leading scorer averaged 26.1 ppg along with 8 rebounds, 6.1 steals and 5 assists for 28-6 state champs ... poured in 35 points in 71-61 4A state title final over Cheyenne ... eclipsed 30-point mark nine times ... Sunset Region MVP ... signed early with Tennessee.
Said Gaels coach Grant Rice: "I know he'll be successful at the next level, and who knows how far he might go after that? Obviously he has great offensive numbers, but when someone can shut people down defensively like that, you know they're going to go a long way."
JOHNNY WHEELER, SG, Cheyenne, 6-5, Sr.
Noteworthy: High-flier averaged 18.2 points, 4.5 rebounds, 2.5 assists for 30-5 state runner-ups ... scored 51 points in team's three state tournament games ... helped team to Northwest Division, Sunset Region titles, second-place finish in Holiday Prep Gold bracket.
Said Desert Shields coach Larry Johnson: "Not only did he lead us in scoring, Johnny did all the intangibles: getting on the floor for loose balls, getting a big rebound, whatever it took. But I'm most proud of his commitment to the classroom -- he turned everything around there this year."
NICK PORTER, SF, Desert Pines, 6-2, Sr.
Noteworthy: San Diego native averaged 21 points, 10 rebounds, four assists in second season with Jaguars ... first-team All-Sunrise Region ... helped team to share of Northeast Division title, 20-6 record ... scored 21 points in state tournament loss to Cheyenne.
Said Jaguars coach Freddie Thompson: "He did everything we needed him to do for us. He became the scorer we thought he could be, and he did it efficiently. He didn't have to put up 20 shots to score 20 points."
JEREMY ATWATER, PF, Las Vegas, 6-4, Sr.
Noteworthy: Athletic big man averaged 15.8 points, 10.2 rebounds, 2 blocks for 29-4 Wildcats ... led team to Sunrise Region championship, share of Northeast Division title and first-place trophies at Maui Invitational, Las Vegas Prep Championship ... Sunrise Region MVP.
Said Wildcats coach Bob Beskow: "He's been one of the hardest workers we've had on and off the court. He's a solid contributor and a good teammate. And he was so unselfish. When he got doubled and tripled, he wasn't afraid to kick it out to our shooters."
DAVID PADGETT, C, Reno, 6-11, Jr.
Noteworthy: Dominant post player averaged 23 points, 15 rebounds and 8 blocks before going down with a knee injury in his team's 19th game ... Northern Region MVP for second straight season ... expected to return to court by summer...being recruited by Stanford, Arizona and Kansas.
Said Huskies coach Pete Padgett: "There wasn't much doubt that he was the dominant player in our part of the state. With him healthy, we thought we were in a position to qualify for the state tournament. He's far and away the best player I've coached in 25 years, and he's as good a person as he is a player."
KURT BAILEY, Coach, Basic
Noteworthy: Led Wolves to 16-11 record during 2001-02 season, one year after the school went 5-22 ... team finished second in Southeast Division, nearly upset Las Vegas in Sunrise Region semifinals, losing to eventual regional champs by four points.
