Shoplifted toothbrush leads to arrest of fleeing suspect

Tuesday, March 12, 2002 | 10:07 a.m.

Supermarket employees following a shoplifting suspect Monday night into the parking lot were greeted by a drawn gun, Metro Police said. The suspect, whose name had not been released this morning, reportedly walked out of Raley's, 3864 W. Sahara Ave., about 5:45 p.m. with the electrict toothbrush, Sgt. Chris Darcy said.

"Employees in the store observed him take the toothbrush and join three other men in the parking lot," Darcy said.

Security guards approached the group, and one of the men reportedly brandished a gun and another had a knife, Darcy said.

The men then ran from the lot and the guards chased them, Darcy said.

"The man who took the toothbrush was arrested after he ran across Sahara Avenue, but the others have not been apprehended," Darcy said.

Witnesses said they saw three men run toward an office complex with an underground parking structure just east of the supermarket. About 200 people were evacuated from the building, and about 40 officers, including SWAT members and K-9 units, searched the building, but found no trace of the men.

"We have not yet recovered the toothbrush," Darcy said.
