NLV to honor fallen officer

North Las Vegas officials on Wednesday will honor a fallen police officer with a parade.

The ceremony for Raul Elizondo, killed in the line of duty on Jan. 30, 1995, will take place at the officer's namesake elementary school at 4865 Goldfield St. at 8:15 a.m.

Celebrating Elizondo "gives our community a chance to come together to pay tribute to the work of police officers," acting police Chief Joe Forti said.

Law enforcement officials from around Southern Nevada will participate in the parade and join students for a breakfast at the school.

Easton to speak at Palace Station

Sheena Easton will address the members of Working in Communications and their guests at 11:30 a.m. Thursday at Palace Station's Laugh Trax.

WIC provides a networking forum to promote the open exchange of ideas, raise scholarship funs for local college students, provide educational and employment opportunities for its members, and recognize the efforts and talents of outstanding individuals and companies. Call 650-8444.

Weekly schedules two sessions

Councilman Lawrence Weekly will hold a town hall meeting today at the National Association of Latin Americans, 323 N. Maryland Parkway, and Thursday at Ruth Fyfe Elementary School, 4101 W. Bonanza Road. Both are at 6:30 p.m.

Residents will be able to use headsets that will give them an immediate translation of the meeting, and residents will be able to speak about their concerns about neighborhood issues in the primary language. Call 249-3514.

The Tortoise Group

will host the slide presentation "The Great Tortoise" at 1 p.m. Saturday at the Nevada State Museum in Lorenzi Park, 3333 Washington Ave. Learn why tortoises need a high protein diet and what vegetables can't supply. Admission is free. Call 739-8043.

The Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority

presents its fifth annual black tie Mardi Gras Ball at 8 p.m. Saturday at the Monte Carlo. The event will feature a New Orleans-style buffet, live band and door prizes. Tickets are $75. Call 594-5053.

The Kid's Co-Op,

a nonprofit cooperative preschool, is having a fund-raising auction and buffet dinner at 6:30 p.m. Friday at the Silk Purse Ranch, 8101 Racel St. All proceeds from the fund-raiser will go towards a building fund. Patriotic dress is also encouraged. Tickets are $20. Call 656-7409.

Community College of Southern Nevada,
