City projects receive engineering awards

Tuesday, March 12, 2002 | 8:57 a.m.

Two city of Las Vegas projects were recognized for excellence by the American Council of Engineering Companies of Nevada because they are expected to save taxpayers millions of dollars by minimizing torn-up city streets.

The Northwest Water Resource Center on Durango Drive between Gowan Road and Cheyenne Avenue won the ACEC's highest recognition, the grand conceptor award. The project conserves water by treating up to 10 million gallons of wastewater a day which then irrigates large turf areas such as golf courses and parks.

The city partnered with the Las Vegas Valley Water District to build the $37 million treatment center, which went into service on July 6, 2001.

The city also received an award for the Sloan Lane sewer project involving design and construction of 12,600 feet of sewer line along sections of Sloan Lane, East Charleston Boulevard, Vegas Valley Drive and Nellis Boulevard. The project required minimal excavation, disrupting motorists the least, by using a method called sliplining.
