Hunt begins for ethics chief

SUN CAPITAL BUREAU

The state Ethics Commission has rejected a proposal to combine the jobs of its executive director and its legal counsel.

The commission Thursday decided to recruit a replacement for Executive Director Polly Hamilton, who resigned from the $78,000-a-year job for personal reasons.

Commission Chairman Todd Russell said he hopes the state Personnel Department will have a list of candidates ready in 30 days.

The commission considered combining the executive director's job with that of commission counsel Nancy Varnum. Russell said that would not be feasible.

The commission wants to start new ventures such as a newsletter, which would mean additional duties for the executive director, he said. He also said there would be problems if the job were consolidated and the person holding the position left.
