Bush invited to dam for bureau centennial

Monday, March 11, 2002 | 9:45 a.m.

The Bureau of Reclamation, which runs Hoover Dam, is inviting President Bush to the site to help celebrate the agency's 100th anniversary.

Bob Walsh, bureau spokesman, said the invitation is for a June 17 event to commemorate the anniversary. The White House hasn't responded yet but probably won't until close to that date, he added.

Activities for the commemoration are still in the planning stage, Walsh said.

"We're still putting all of those things together," he said.

The bureau is best known for dams, hydroelectric plants and irrigation projects in 17 Western states, including Nevada. It is the country's largest water wholesaler and second largest producer of hydroelectric power.

Lake Mead, an artificial reservoir created by Hoover Dam, provides most of Clark County's 1.5 million people with water for daily use.
