UNR to share cost overruns for Fire Science Academy

The University of Nevada, Reno has agreed to share cost overruns of up to $2.5 million to finish the troubled Fire Science Academy.

The academy in Carlin is slated to reopen May 6.

Up to $1.95 million is needed to finish the more than $30 million project, and UNR officials had contended that Sparks-based construction company Clark & Sullivan should pay for the overruns.

However, on Thursday the Board of Regents voted unanimously to approve the new agreement.

The settlement calls for UNR to pay $775,000 before a 50-50 cost-sharing agreement kicks in. After that the two parties will share up to $2.5 million in costs.

"Part of the problem (with the cost overruns) is that engineering estimates on what these things have cost have been low," said Mark Ghan, assistant general counsel for the university system."

UNR has been using $4.6 million in settlement money to fix the problems, many of which are related to contaminated soil.
