Tournament notebook: Lady Rebels’ Frohlich tops rebounding mark
Thursday, March 7, 2002 | 10:16 a.m.
One day after garnering her third consecutive Mountain West Conference Player of the Year award, UNLV senior forward Linda Frohlich reached another milestone.
Frohlich grabbed 14 rebounds in the Lady Rebels' 57-38 victory over Utah on Wednesday night at the Thomas & Mack Center. That gives her 1,096 rebounds in her career, breaking the school mark of 1,094 set by two-time All-American Pauline Jordan between 1987 and 1990.
Frohlich, the only four-time first team all conference pick in any sport at UNLV, had earlier this year broken the school career scoring mark held by former All-American Misty Thomas.
The 6-2 native of Oldendorf, Germany also registered her 13th double-double of the season with 17 points and 14 rebounds.
Thorn, a 5-foot-10 guard, made eight long-range jumpers to break the previous record of four held by four other players including herself. The junior All-American was named to the All-Mountain West Conference first team.
"That was only halfcourt. Imagine if I was running up and down," he said. "Sitting out has compromised my wind. I'd give anything to play this week, but it's not going to happen."
"I've never gotten to play in the tournament," Kelly said. "Over the past couple of weeks, I've talked to (former Rebels) Danny Brotherson and Donovan Stewart. They didn't get to play last year either, so I feel like I'm playing for them, too."
Kelly said his pulled groin has gradually improved and he'll be ready for tonight's tipoff against New Mexico. "It only hurts in practice," he said with a laugh.
"Since I've been playing, this is the time of year when you start to feel that different kind of excitement," the 6-7 forward said. "I'm sure I'll be nervous, but I'll be OK."
"I didn't see it this way," Rick Majerus said. "I've always felt the player of the year should come from the team that wins the league (Wyoming). That's always been my feeling, unless it's a very special case. And I don't think it's (a special case) this year."
Johnsen averaged 13.2 points and 6.5 rebounds overall, 15.3 and 8.1 in conference play.
