Rebel roundup: Women’s tennis team posts historic win

Thursday, March 7, 2002 | 11:45 a.m.

The UNLV women's tennis team shocked 17th-ranked William & Mary at the Fertitta Tennis Complex Wednesday, 5-1, marking the highest-ranked opponent ever defeated by the program.

The Lady Rebels improved to 8-2 on the year, including 7-1 at home, while the Tribe fell to 8-4.

Before the win, UNLV was ranked No. 41 -- the highest among all Mountain West Conference teams. Individually, Gyorgyi Zsiros made an even more dramatic jump in singles after improving to 15-7 overall. The freshman rose 43 spots to No. 92 in the nation.

The Lady Rebels will take the weekend off and continue their 10-match homestand by facing No. 32 Indiana today and No. 33 Pennsylvania on Friday.

In doing so, the Rebels leapt past Oregon State in head-to-head competition, but missed an opportunity to climb to 12th and defeat Oregon after scoring a combined 13-over on the round's last three holes.

UNLV's best round of the day came from junior Erin Borcherts (83-77-74--234), who shaved nine strokes off her first-round score and climbed to 45th place on the individual leaderboard.

The Rebels' tournament leader, for the fourth time in five events this year, was freshman Hwanhee Lee (73-76-80--231). Despite a final-round score of 80, she finished tied for 37th.

California won the event.
