Columnist Ron Kantowski: Much madness at Mack

Thursday, March 7, 2002 | 10:03 a.m.

Ron Kantowski's insider notes column appears Tuesday and his Page One column appears Thursday. He can be reached at ron@lasvegassun.com or (702) 259-4088.

There's an expression in sports that when the competition is evenly matched, you can "throw a blanket over" the teams, players, horses, cars, etc.

In regard to the Mountain West men's basketball tournament, which gets under way today with four first-round games at the Thomas & Mack Center, you had better trade in that blanket for Carney Wilson's old comforter.

When the No. 8 seed (Air Force) takes the No. 1 seed (Wyoming) to four overtimes before losing and then drops the rematch by a scant three points, then it's like locking Pamela Anderson in a room with Tommy Lee, Vince Neil and an unlimited supply of Jack Daniels. Almost anything is possible.

A couple of weeks ago, I suggested in this space that UNLV's next loss might very well be in the NCAA East Regional, and in that the Rebels haven't made me look foolish for saying it, I'll stick with that prediction.

But it's not as safe as any of the following which are sure to take place in or near the T&M at some point this weekend:
