Savvy wine buys: Chateau d’Or et de Gueules ‘98 Syrah Blend
Wednesday, March 6, 2002 | 8:26 a.m.
Here is a true surprise, a blend of four grapes, Syrah, Carignan, Grenache and Mourvedre, all components of popular Rhone wines that usually are priced much higher. The reason for the lower price is due to the fact that the chateau is actually in the Camargue, France -- French cowboy country, where horses and salt marshes are much more common than grapes. And this is an intense wine, almost purple in color, with a rich nose, lots of spicy fruit and a long, lingering finish. It's a great food wine, and it would be equally impressive with a nice, ripe cheese.
Available at Marche Bacchus and Las Vegas Wine Company, $10.99.
