Letter: Learn definition of democracy

Friday, March 1, 2002 | 10:07 a.m.

I must rebut Mr. Ron Danish's Feb. 26 letter on democracy and fixed elections. I'm not sure what Mr. Danish hopes to accomplish by attacking someone for thinking and calling our country a democracy.

First, we need more thinking and less rhetoric. Second, Mr. Danish needs to become acquainted with a dictionary and a reputable American history book. He claims we are a republic, but not a democracy. Not so.

We are a republic, which according to the dictionary is "A political order in which the supreme power lies in a body of citizens who are entitled to vote for officers and representatives responsible to them." And, according to any reputable history book, we are also a democracy because today we choose to select our officers and representatives through universal suffrage and majority rule.

Regarding his belief that if the "unwashed masses" all voted, corporations would be unable to control elections, I have just one question. If this is so, then how do you explain why corporate shill George W. Bush occupies the White House and not the elected president, Albert Gore?
