Action sought against film producers

Las Vegas Mayor Oscar Goodman has directed city staff to explore whether misdemeanor charges can be filed against two local producers who set off a nationwide controversy with their film "Bumfights: Cause for Concern Vol. 1," which features stunts by homeless people.

Goodman said Thursday that he has directed City Attorney Brad Jerbic to determine whether misdemeanor charges can be filed against Las Vegas-based producers Ray Laticia and Ty Beeson if they did not apply with the city for a film permit.

The mayor met earlier in the week with Sheriff Jerry Keller and Attorney General Frankie Sue del Papa to discuss whether the city has the jurisdiction to file charges, and if a crime was actually committed.

The producers say the fights and stunts in the video are staged by paid actors. They have sold 300,000 copies since they released the video about two months ago.

Goodman called the film "morally repugnant."

Work to start on new park

The city of Las Vegas today was scheduled to start construction on Patriot Park, located in the northwest.

The $2.5 million park will be built on 8 acres near Alexander Road and Foundation Avenue.
