Crash stops I-15 traffic

Traffic came to a standstill early this morning on Interstate 15 southbound just past Blue Diamond Road after a three-car accident involving a pickup, a motorhome and a tractor-trailer spread debris across the freeway.

The pickup driver was taken to University Medical Center for observation but was not believed to be seriously injured, Clark County Fire Department officials said. The man's pickup rear-ended the motor home and then was run over by the semi just before 4 a.m., officials said.

"It's a miracle that he lived, a miracle that he wasn't injured," Bob Leinbach, fire department spokesman, said.

The scene looked like a helicopter crash with car components spread all over the interstate, Leinbach said.

The tractor-trailer, which was carrying 43,000 pounds of talc, a nontoxic powder, and the pickup were destroyed, Leinbach said. The trucks came to rest 600 feet from the collision. The motorhome was able to leave the scene shortly after the accident, he said.

The Nevada Highway Patrol diverted traffic north of Blue Diamond Road off the freeway. The freeway was expected to reopen about 1 p.m., spokesman Alan Davidson said.

Stabbing suspect sought by Metro

Metro Police were searching this morning for a suspect in the death of a man found stabbed Monday night.

Victor Osario-Ramirez, 23, was killed while visiting friends in an apartment in the 4300 block of Tara Avenue, near Decatur Boulevard. A group of people were drinking when one of the men became angry, got a large kitchen knife and threatened the others, police said.

Vicente Guido, 32, is a suspect in the stabbing of Osario-Ramirez, who was found about 11:30 p.m. in a gravel lot on Tara Avenue. He was taken to University Medical Center, where he died Tuesday about 1:25 a.m.

Guido left the apartment and has not reported to work since the stabbing, police said.

Anyone with information in this case is asked to call Metro's homicide unit at 229-3521 or Secret Witness at 385-5555.

Grant will fight domestic violence

The state has received $1.1 million in federal grant money to distribute in an effort to combat domestic violence and sexual assault, Attorney General Frankie Sue Del Papa said Wednesday.

The grants were awarded as part of the Stop Violence Against Women Act and to be distributed statewide.

Del Papa's office said dozens of entities submitted proposals seeking more than $2 million in grants for their respective projects.

Priority was given to services for underserved populations -- the elderly, disabled and minority victims.

New programs funded this year include expanding the marshal's office within the Las Vegas Municipal Court to provide for a dedicated domestic violence marshal to service outstanding domestic violence warrants.
