Indictment returned in killing of woman, 84

Thursday, June 27, 2002 | 9:28 a.m.

A Clark County grand jury Tuesday handed down a five-count indictment against a felon accused of sexually assaulting and murdering an 84-year-old Las Vegas woman.

The indictment unsealed Wednesday charges Glenn Mundo, 29, with open murder, along with sexual assault, robbery, burglary and grand larceny auto.

The murder, robbery and sexual assault counts allege the crimes were committed against a person 65 years of age or older, thus doubling any sentence if he is convicted.

Prosecutors are scheduled to decide later this week if they will seek the death penalty for Mundo, who is accused of killing Virginia Peart in June.

Peart's son found her body on the floor of her home near Owens Avenue and Nellis Boulevard on June 25. An autopsy showed she had been asphyxiated.

According to police records, Mundo's fingerprint was inside the neck of a broken beer bottle that was found on a living room chair. A dark hair found on the victim's chest and a sample of Mundo's hair were submitted for DNA testing and a match could not be ruled out, reports show.

Tests are also under way to determine if bite marks on Peart's body match teeth impressions taken from Mundo.

Mundo will be arraigned July 3 by District Court Judge Donald Mosley.
