Red Wings goalie Dominik Hasek retires

Dominik Hasek wanted to become a Detroit Red Wing to complete his resume with a Stanley Cup.

Now that the 37-year-old future hall of famer has one, he's retiring.

Hasek, one of the most accomplished goalies in history, announced today he would not return for the second year of the contract he signed last summer.

"Winning the Cup has been everything I could ask for," Hasek said.

Possible replacements for Hasek include Toronto's Curtis Joseph, who becomes an unrestricted free agent on July 1 if he doesn't sign again with the Maple Leafs.

Other high-profile goalies who could become unrestricted free agents include Boston's Byron Dafoe, the New York Rangers' Mike Richter and Dallas' Ed Belfour. The Stars have said they will not re-sign Belfour.

Florida Atlantic gives Green a new contract

Sidney Green, who led Florida Atlantic to the NCAA tournament for the first time in school history, was rewarded with a new contract Monday.

Green, a former UNLV star who played 10 seasons in the NBA, transformed Florida Atlantic from a 2-28 record in his first season to winning the Atlantic Sun Conference tournament in March.

The Owls, based in Boca Raton, Fla., gave Alabama a scare in the opening round of the tournament before losing 86-78. They finished the season 19-12.

"The stage is now set to continue building FAU basketball into one of the top up-and-coming basketball programs in the country," Florida Atlantic athletic director Tom Cargill said.

LV's Greg Maddux to miss start vs. Mets

Atlanta ace Greg Maddux of Las Vegas will not make his scheduled start tonight against the New York Mets because of a lingering calf problem, and instead will pitch Friday night at Fenway Park.

Maddux had to leave his last two starts because of a sore left calf muscle. He did some light jogging before Monday night's game, but manager Bobby Cox decided to hold him back for a few more days.

Albie Lopez will pitch in Maddux's place against the New York Mets.

Maddux is 7-2 with a 3.20 ERA in 15 starts. Cox said he wanted to have Maddux pitch at Boston because he wouldn't have to bat or run with the designated hitter.

"It makes sense," Maddux said after the Braves beat the Mets 3-2 Monday night. "Instead of taking three days at the All-Star break, take them now."

Even so, Cox wants to handle Maddux with caution.

"It's not going to completely heal for four weeks," Cox said.
