Former bartenders sue Caesars Palace

Five former bartenders of the Forum Bar at Caesars Palace sued owner Park Place Entertainment Corp. of Las Vegas, alleging violations of the Civil Rights Act of 1964 and the Age Discrimination in Employment Act of 1967.

The bartenders, who are also members of Local 165 of the Bartenders and Beverage Dispensers Union, an affiliate of the Hotel Employees and Restaurant Employees International (Culinary) Union, sued Park Place in U.S. District Court.

The plaintiffs said they weren't hired back after the bar, which closed on April 2, 2001, reopened as the "Shadow Bar" after a two-month renovation.

Park Place spokeswoman Debbie Munch disputed the allegations.

"All the Caesars Palace bar staff were given an opportunity to train and audition for the new positions and some were hired. The individuals who filed the recent action in the U.S. District Court didn't audition," she said.

"These allegations already have been reviewed by the Nevada Equal Rights Commission, which found no probable cause and dismissed the charges."
