Red Rock program features storytelling

Red Rock Canyon National Conservation Area offers hikes, walks and programs free of charge, but reservations are required. To make reservations or for more information, call 363-1922. Some upcoming programs:

Desert Babies: A program featuring storytelling, crafts, and a snack, will be Wednesday. RSVP.

Willow Springs Picnic Hike: A 1 1/2-mile hike through Willow Springs to discover the different plants at Red Rock.

Birding: A 1 1/2-mile easy hike Thursday. Join Athena as you go looking for birds at Red Springs. RSVP.

Hike Leaders' Choice: A six-mile moderately strenuous hike on the Bristlecone Trail Friday.

Reptile Watch: A 3 1/2-mile, moderate hike Friday to hunt for reptiles.

Coyote Kids: Join Vicki inside the Visitor Center Saturday for different themes every week: Self-esteem, Enrichment, Environmental Education through Conservation Journaling Songs/Games/Crafts.

An Evening Walk with Bats: A slide program at the Visitor Center Saturday on bats, and a short hike to the guzzler at White Rock to look and listen for bats. RSVP.

Agriculture leadership workshop scheduled

The Cooperative Extension and Farm Bureau is offering an agriculture leadership workshop titled "Making a Difference for Nevada Agriculture" from 5:30 p.m. to 9 p.m. Friday and from 9 a.m. until 3 p.m. Saturday at the University of Nevada Cooperative Extension Learning Center, 2590 Lindell Ave.

The program is for Nevadans interested in learning leadership skills and applying them to enhance agriculture public policy.

Registration is $20, which includes dinner Friday, and refreshments and lunch Saturday.

Teachers may also apply for Continuing Education credit. For more information, call Alice Crites at 397-2604.

Youth Alliance will host karate program

The Nevada Youth Alliance will present its Get High on Kicks open house from 5:30 p.m. until 7:30 p.m. Thursday at Champion Plaza, 55 S. Gibson Road, Suite 106, Henderson.

GHOK is a Karate program that teaches self-discipline/education and the sanctity of the mind, body and soul, and is designed to promote leadership, character, and health of the youth while emphasizing their social, cultural and education growth.

A pool-safety awareness program

will be held from 11 a.m. until 2 p.m. Thursday at the Palo Verde Pool on North Pavilion Center Drive in Summerlin. The Las Vegas Fire Department and Metro Police will have vehicles available for demonstration at the pool.
