LV student wins one of 520 worldwide military scholarships

A Las Vegas student has won a $1,500 college scholarship from the second annual Scholarships for Military Children Program of the Nellis Air Force Base commissary.

Silverado High School Khristine Rodriquez was one of 520 winners out of 5,100 applicants worldwide. Rodriquez was active in student council, soccer, Special Olympics, Key Club and Art Club while in high school. She plans to attend UNLV.

The program was initiated by the Defense Commisary Agency in 2000 and is open to qualified high school seniors or college-enrolled students who are children of members of the U.S. armed services, including active duty, retirees, National Guard or reserves or deceased personnel.

Hershey Foods Corp., one of the program's many private donors, paid for the scholarship.

Applicants were required to maintain a 3.0 grade point average, be active in school and community organizations, demonstrate leadership qualities and write an essay on their community involvement.

Khristine is the daughter of Army Staff Sgt. Ricardo Rodriguez.
