Letter: Prudent tactic to kill plate design
Friday, June 21, 2002 | 4:55 a.m.
Nevadans should be proud of our involvement, through the Nevada Test Site during the years 1951-1992, in protecting America during the Cold War. But this pride should not let anyone forget about the duplicity of the Department of Energy and Congress when sickness, genetic damage and death were ignored and denied by them. Compensation was withheld until activism and legal action forced justice.
Linda Smith, board member of the Nevada Test Site Historical Foundation, wrote in a letter last Sunday that it was "political correctness" that dictated the replacement of the mushroom cloud on the specialized Nevada license plate (proceeds from the plate will go to the Nevada Test Site Historical Foundation).
No, Linda, it was just good tactics against the tyrannical campaign to force a nuclear waste dump on Nevada! It would have been prudent for the Nevada Test Site Historical Foundation to wait for the final betrayal from Congress and the Bush administration.
