Some work cards eliminated
Cashiers, checkers, greeters, waiters, waitresses, liquor catering employees, maids, bellhops, desk clerks, room service personnel, hosts, keno runners and shills won't have to have a work card for a job in North Las Vegas.
The North Las Vegas City Council approved amendments to two city ordinances that eliminated the work card requirement for those job categories.
The ordinance changes added a work card requirement for accountants and internal auditors of casinos and for any executive, employee, agent, officer or director of a gaming licensee that has significant influence over decisions concerning gaming operations.
"It's the first important step in reforming the work card issue in Nevada," Gary Peck, executive director of the American Civil Liberties Union of Nevada, said.
Peck said the ACLU will take a close look at work card regulations in North Las Vegas to see if any other jobs are inappropriately carded.
Police, corrections contract approved
The North Las Vegas City Council approved a five-year, $7.1 million contract for the city's 420 police and corrections officers Wednesday night.
After months of negotiation, the North Las Vegas Police Protective Association ratified the agreement Wednesday afternoon. It gives officers a 20 percent raise overall.
Under the contract's terms, police will receive a 3.75 percent cost of living raise the first year and then 4 percent in each of the next four years.
Corrections Sgt. James Chronister said it was a good contract. "We got basically everything we wanted," he said after the vote.
