BLM land sale will be rescheduled

Monday, June 17, 2002 | 10:39 a.m.

The Bureau of Land Management will hold a rescheduled auction of 216 acres in the Las Vegas Valley as soon as possible while still providing the public with at least 30 days advance notice.

BLM spokesman Phil Guerrero said the agency has not determined a specific date for the auction.

"There's a lot of logistics involved," he said.

The agency must find an open slot for the Clark County Commission Chambers, the usual spot for its regular auctions, then make sure the General Services Administration and an auctioneer can both work the sale, he said.

U.S. District Court Judge Lloyd George on Wednesday denied an injunction to stop the land sale.

Bob Hall, president of the Nevada Environmental Coalition, asked for the injunction, saying that the BLM has failed to account for air pollution that would be caused by development of the federal land.

George ruled that the BLM has sufficiently studied the cumulative effects of pollution from the development.

The original date for the auction, authorized under the 1998 Southern Nevada Public Lands Management Act, was May 18. The BLM and U.S. Justice Department voluntarily delayed the land sale to provide time to resolve the request for the injunction.
