Further, privatizing indigent defense in Las Vegas was spawned to save money but will likely result in greater costs when lower-paid private attorneys spend even less time with clients, leading to more jail time. My tax dollars should provide a proper defense for all, not to warehouse indigent convicts who received inadequate counsel. The indigent cannot afford the services of an Oscar Goodman, but we should at least provide them a dedicated public servant if just to prevent conviction of innocents, which I consider a sacrosanct American principle.
