Wendovers could unite in Nevada

The U.S. House approved a measure Tuesday that would allow Wendover, Utah, and West Wendover, Nev., to unite as one city in Nevada if approved by local voters and both state legislatures.

The two cities are located where Interstate 80 crosses the Nevada-Utah state line. Legal casino gambling occurs on the Nevada side, but not in Utah.

The House approved a compact between Nevada and Utah needed to change the states' boundaries, as proposed by local backers of the unification plan. It would allow moving the Nevada state line about 3 miles into Utah, shifting approximately 10,000 acres from Utah to Nevada.

The Senate still has to approve the measure.

Appeal expanded for all blood types

United Blood Services has extended its appeal for all blood types due to a continued shortage.

A combination of serious accidents and low donor response has forced the blood center to import blood from other areas to keep up with local hospital needs.

"We expect the critical shortage in Las Vegas to continue through the weekend," Jan Dalby, donor recruitment director, said.

United Blood Services in Las Vegas is not alone, Dalby said. Half the blood centers throughout the United States are reporting critical shortages.

Eligible donors must be at least 17 years old and weigh 110 pounds. Potential donors can call 233-9620 for more information.
