Towns weigh gambling issue

Tuesday, June 11, 2002 | 11:01 a.m.

Casino gambling is among the local ballot issues that will draw Maine voters to the polls today.

Several southern Maine towns will decide whether they want to welcome or erect roadblocks to gambling proposals. They include Eliot, Kennebunk, Kittery, North Berwick, Ogunquit and Wells.

The votes will send a message to Maine's two Indian tribes that want to build a luxury casino and resort in the state. They will also send signals to state legislators, who are expected to consider a bill next year to legalize casino gambling in Maine.

The Legislature has the power to ignore local objections to casino gambling.
