SUN CAPITAL BUREAU

CARSON CITY -- The maximum check to the newly unemployed after July 1 will rise from $300 to $309, the state Employment Security Division said today.

And the number of new weekly claims for benefits has fallen to its lowest point since Sept. 11.

Division Administrator Birgit Baker said those who are presently receiving unemployment benefits will not see any increase in their checks. But those who file after July 1 will be eligible to collect the maximum $309.

Other lesser benefits will not change, she said.

The weekly rate was changed to reflect a higher average salary statewide. It was $619.35 last year, Baker said.

The division said that new claims filed for the week of May 31 totaled 2,757, or one higher than those of the Sept. 11 week.

April's unemployment totaled 5.5 percent the lowest since September which was at 5.2 percent.
