Two injured in bus-truck crash

Monday, June 10, 2002 | 10:48 a.m.

Metro Police are investigating a crash between a truck and a CAT bus Sunday morning that sent two people to the hospital with minor injuries.

The collision occurred about 8:30 a.m. at the corner of Tropicana Avenue and Maryland Parkway when a pickup traveling eastbound on Tropicana ran a red light, according to officers and witnesses.

The truck clipped a bicyclist and crashed into the rear of the Route 109 CAT bus, driven by a local operator who had crossed the picket lines of striking drivers, ATC company spokeswoman Valerie Michael said.

Two people were transported to University Medical Center, treated and released, a hospital nursing supervisor said.

Accidents are common in large bus systems, Michael said. "We've got 300 vehicles on the road each day," she said.

Police said the pickup driver may be charged with driving under the influence. No charges had been filed by last night.
