Letter: A democracy, not a theocracy

Monday, June 10, 2002 | 9:03 a.m.

So our city councilwoman, Lynette Boggs McDonald, says in our governing body that "we are Christian people." And then she condemns her opponents "into the fire in the name of Jesus Christ."

Excuse me, but does this woman realize that America is not yet a theocracy? We are a democracy, which means that the people rule, not any specific god. Does she know that she represents people of many faiths and some with no faith at all?

Religion is a private affair and should be kept out of the council chambers, which is what our forefathers, in their wisdom, wanted.

Even Jesus criticized those who pray in public so others could see, and requested that they go home and pray in their closets. I think that would be a good place for Boggs McDonald.
