Las Vegas blood bank supply down to critical level

Monday, June 10, 2002 | 10:04 a.m.

For the fourth time this year, United Blood Services has declared a critical shortage on all blood types in Las Vegas.

The critical appeal means that United Blood Services has less than a three-day supply of blood on its shelves.

There are no other cities available in the nation to assist Las Vegas.

United Blood Services is encouraging new residents to donate blood, Teri Weathers, a supervisor, said.

While responses for donors have been mixed, donations are outpaced by high demand, according to the National Blood Exchange, a network of blood centers across the United States.

Although local and area hospitals may have an ample supply of blood to handle current needs, they have been alerted to the blood bank's situation, Weathers said.

The rate of donors who keep appointments has fallen to a low of 64 percent, she said.

In addition, tighter restrictions implemented by the FDA because of "mad cow disease" has further exacerbated the problem, Weathers said.

Eligible donors must be at least 17 years old and weigh 110 pounds. Potential blood donors with questions should call (702) 233-9620.

United Blood Services is a nonprofit organization established in 1950.
