Letter: Treat bus drivers with due respect
Friday, June 7, 2002 | 4:46 a.m.
I do wish people who were against the CAT bus drivers knew what they were talking about. First of all, the paratransit drivers do make more than the fixed route bus drivers, and they don't have to worry about drunks abusing them verbally or physically as their dispatchers know exactly who they are picking up.
They do work hard and deserve every penny they earn. But so do the fixed route drivers, who have all sorts of people they have to pick up, and for the lowest wages of all drivers in the country.
I am disabled and depend on them a great deal, but I am willing to give up the pleasure of knowing exactly when my bus is coming in favor of them being on strike.
ATC Vancom respects no one but its own pockets. Half the time the drivers don't even get enough time to gulp down a quick lunch.
Starting pay in training should be a minimum of $10 and hour and after a year's time $12 per hour with annual raises is more than fair. I am sure then they would not object to $47 per biweekly pay for medical insurance.
