Letter: Comments from Boggs McDonald were out of line
Friday, June 7, 2002 | 4:46 a.m.
I'm wondering if Lynette Boggs McDonald is running for ayatollah or for congresswoman. She sounds more like a Taliban candidate than a candidate for election in our constitutional republic.
Boggs McDonald is completely deluded in her concept of our government when, as a city councilwoman, she makes the public statement, "We are a Christian people."
She follows that by telling a councilman with whom she disagrees, "I send you right back into the fire in the name of Jesus Christ."
Our nation is composed of people with many differing religious beliefs and a city council meeting is not an appropriate place to express those beliefs.
It's unfortunate that Boggs McDonald's pathetic campaign for Congress, having hit bottom, is trying to salvage itself with a desperate attempt to use her religion to win votes. I'm confident that most religious people will not go along with this disgraceful tactic.
Having somebody like Boggs McDonald representing our state in Congress would not only be embarrassing to all those in Nevada who believe in our Constitution and in the concept of religious tolerance, it is also frightening to think that such a fanatic is trying to have a part in determining the laws of our country.
Lynette Boggs McDonald may be qualified for a religious ministry, but certainly not for a public office.
