For the first time in more than 15 years, one school stands as both the king and queen of high school sports on the diamond.
Reno's Wooster High became the first school since 1984 to capture both the large-school baseball and softball titles. Not surprisingly, that rare accomplishment has translated to recognition on this year's Las Vegas Sun All-State teams.
The Colts' Ron Malcolm and Dick Allen have been named Coaches of the Year for baseball and softball, respectively, after leading their squads through tough state draws.
Wooster pitcher Brianne McGowan is the Sun's Softball State Player of the Year for the second consecutive season. One of three pitchers selected to the first team, she is joined there by Colts' shortstop Cindy Elkins, the first four-time member of the all-state first team.
Chris Toto, an outfielder and pitcher who had a win or a save in all four of Wooster's state tournament wins, represents his squad on the baseball first team.
Silverado's Tyler Coon is this year's Sun Baseball State Player of the Year after leading the Skyhawks to division and regional titles.
The Sun's all-state teams were chosen by prep writer Spencer Patterson, with input from coaches and media outlets statewide, including Nevprep.com's Chuck Hildebrand.
