New zoning for strip clubs eyed

Thursday, June 6, 2002 | 8:51 a.m.

New Clark County laws could soon control more risky business in the area's strip clubs and other adult venues.

The Clark County Commission on Wednesday accepted an ordinance for public debate and possible adoption June 19 that would create a separate zoning designation for sexually oriented businesses.

The law now requires a "manufacturing" zoning, M-1, for such businesses. That has led the commission to be skeptical of anyone seeking such light-industrial zoning no matter what the supposed purpose.

Commissioner Myrna Williams said "adult clubs" and other sexually oriented businesses deserve their own zoning designation. The idea is not to curb constitutionally protected activities, she emphasized.

But the law would give the commission more control over new adult businesses near residential areas, Williams said.

Commissioner Yvonne Atkinson-Gates is considering another law that would affect many existing and future strip clubs. She declined to discuss the idea in detail, but said it likely would involve the issue of dancers touching patrons at clubs that serve alcohol.

Although touching is limited by law, some policymakers suspect that extra-legal grappling may occur in some Las Vegas area strip clubs.
