Letter: Bus drivers can’t expect free ride on insurance

Thursday, June 6, 2002 | 9:08 a.m.

I really believe that the CAT bus drivers are being unreasonable and selfish.

My husband works in the maintenance yard as a service worker-fueler. He has been employed since 1998 with ATC. The service workers and mechanics currently pay health care premiums -- $43.85 is deducted biweekly from my husband's check. This provides coverage for a family of eight. The amounts the drivers were being asked to pay, according to the May 26 Las Vegas Sun, were still less than what the service workers and mechanics are currently paying.

My husband was a member of the Amalgamated Transit Union up until January of this year, when he and other service workers and mechanics left the union because it was only benefiting the drivers. The union was not interested in what the service workers and mechanics needed.

The fixed-route drivers should realize that the day of the free ride for health care is history. If they took jobs elsewhere, I am sure they would be paying some type of premiums for health care.

If any bus driver deserves more money it would be the paratransit bus drivers, who have to actually get off the bus and assist their riders.
