FCC OKs Las Vegas phone transfer

Thursday, June 6, 2002 | 11:37 a.m.

The Federal Communications Commission has granted a limited waiver of telecommunications rules allowing bankrupt One Source Teleservices to transfer customers to Sprint Corp., Las Vegas' dominant local phone service provider.

Las Vegas-based One Source, which filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection in February, transferred local and long-distance customers to Sprint May 23 without service interruption.

Mitch Altman, president of One Source, said the company plans to petition to dismiss the bankruptcy this week and will work to win customers back.

"We view this as a temporary situation upon our expected immediate settlement of issues with Sprint," Altman said in a statement Tuesday.

One Source, which resells phone service it acquires from Sprint, said it had a dispute with Sprint over billing issues. Sprint said it has no conflict with One Source and that it would continue to lease lines to the company, which has 20 employees.

Sprint and One Source did not disclose the number of affected customers, the majority of which are businesses.
