Annexing plans are proposed

Thursday, June 6, 2002 | 8:52 a.m.

North Las Vegas may become the first city to annex 170 undeveloped acres under an alternate process approved by the 2001 Legislature.

The City Council voted Wednesday night to initiate two annexation procedures, one under its traditional process and the other under the alternative.

The traditional procedure would bring a 760-acre county island at Ann Road and North 5th Street into the city for residential and commercial development. A majority of the property owners supported annexation.

However, Mayor Michael Montandon asked city staff to leave the 170-acre R.C. Farm, a pig farm, intact as a county island.

Pig farm owner Robert Coombs said he will continue raising hogs by feeding them scraps that would otherwise be thrown away by Las Vegas hotels.

The City Council also approved two other parcels, one 80 acres Rome Boulevard and Centennial Parkway, and another 90 acres near Interstate 15 and Centennial.

The city will attempt annexation of the other two parcels under the new rules, said Randal Cagle, NLV property manager.

Once the city annexes the property, taxes will increase 25 percent, he said.
