President of examiners board says not enough time given for teleconference

SUN CAPITAL BUREAU

CARSON CITY -- The president of the state Board of Medical Examiners says there was no time to arrange a teleconference or telephone meeting to Las Vegas to allow Southern Nevada physicians to testify on a plan to grant a special waiver for new obstetricians.

But there may a meeting in Las Vegas in the future on the issue.

Dr. Cheryl Hug-English said Tuesday that Gov. Kenny Guinn's request came in last week, and the governor wanted it on the regular meeting of the board last Friday and Saturday.

She said that would not have complied with the state's open meeting law. The special meeting was called for Tuesday, the earliest possible date to comply with the law, she said.

That allowed no time to arrange for a teleconference or a telephone meeting to allow physicians from Southern Nevada to participate.

The board last held a meeting in Las Vegas in December 2000. At the meeting Saturday the board decided to consider holding a session in Southern Nevada in 2003.
