Las Vegas man injured in shootout with police

A 22-year-old Las Vegas man was in the Clark County jail this morning, charged with attempted murder of a police officer and felony resisting arrest after a shootout Tuesday at a senior citizen apartment complex, Metro Police said.

The suspect was identified as Douglas Chancy Ackley, who was taken to University Medical Center for treatment of two gunshot wounds in the lower torso shortly after 5 p.m. Tuesday, Metro Homicide Lt. Tom Monahan said.

Ackley was treated at the hospital, then taken to the jail early this morning.

Ackley was charged with attempted murder of a police officer, attempted murder and felony resisting arrest, Monahan said. The second attempted murder count was added, because Ackley is alleged to have fired the same weapon at a friend during a fight that initiated the call to police.

Two Metro patrol officers responded to a call that a fight was occurring outside apartments in the 3200 block of Mojave, Monahan said.

The two-man Metro team included a senior field training officer and a trainee, he said.

As the officers went to talk to a man standing in a driveway near a grassy area with flower beds, he started to run, Monahan said.

One of the officers rounded the corner of the apartment building and was confronted with the suspect pointing a handgun at him. The officer fired one shot, striking the man and knocking him down, Monahan said. The suspect dropped the gun.

"The officer challenged him not to reach for the gun," Monahan said, but despite the warnings the man reached for the gun and the officer reported the suspect fired another round at him.

The officer returned fire, striking the suspect a second time.

Metro officers blocked Mojave Road to traffic north of Desert Inn for about two hours.

As in all cases of an officer-involved shooting, the senior officer and the trainee were placed on routine administrative leave, Monahan said. The trainee did not fire her weapon, he said.

Their names will not be released for 48 hours, following department policy.
