Killer’s bid for parole is rejected

Tuesday, June 4, 2002 | 10:57 a.m.

SUN CAPITAL BUREAU

CARSON CITY -- The state Parole Board said today it has denied release to killer Jack Mazzan, who spent 21 years on death row for the murder of the son of a Reno judge.

Board executive director Susan McCurdy said Mazzan, 55, must wait three years before he can re-apply. She said the board rejected the application because of the nature and seriousness of the offense, the need to protect the public from further criminal activities and the input from the family of the victim and the district attorney's office.

Mazzan was convicted of the 1978 stabbing death of Richard Minor Jr. and was sentenced to death. He maintained his innocence throughout the years. The Supreme Court in 2000 overturned the conviction, saying the prosecution withheld evidence that might clear Mazzan.

Before a second trial could be held, Mazzan pleaded guilty and was sentenced to life in prison with the possibility of parole.
