Sierra fire near containment, new blaze near Pioche

Wednesday, July 31, 2002 | 3:12 a.m.

The most recent fire in the Sierra was in mop-up Wednesday, but a new blaze has flared up in eastern Nevada.

The Silver II fire held at 600 acres on the Alpine-Mono county line south of California 89 and west of Topaz, Calif., about 90 miles southwest of Reno.

It was expected to be fully contained Wednesday evening with control planned for 24 hours later at a cost of $875,000. Demobilization was underway with about 110 people on the line.

Meanwhile, another 600-acre fire was burning in sage, pinon and juniper 15 miles northeast of Pioche. It was 5 percent contained with full containment forecast for Sunday.

The causes of both fires were under investigation.
