Coroner’s inquest vindicates officer

A Clark County coroner's inquest jury deliberated about 20 minutes Friday before finding a Metro Police officer was justified in the June shooting of a 40-year-old man.

Officer Michael McNamee, 31, shot David Orr June 24 in the area of Sierra Vista Drive and Cambridge Street about 12:15 a.m. Orr was shot and killed after raising up what appeared to be a gun, according to testimony.

The gun turned out to be a BB gun, but Orr's neighbors testified they saw him with a gun in his hand and officers yelling for him to put it down moments before the shooting.

McNamee and other officers testified they found a 2 1/2-year-old boy wandering in an alley and were taking the child into protective custody. Police said Orr became hostile with the remaining officers as they put the boy in the back of a police car. They said Orr left the area and returned a short time later with what appeared to be a gun in his hand.
