Sex assault suspect escapes for six hours

Friday, July 26, 2002 | 9:49 a.m.

A sexual assault suspect escaped from a Metro Police interview room Thursday morning and was on the run for about six hours before he was caught.

Wilber Woodard, 59, was being held without bail this morning in the Clark County jail on sexual assault of a person under the age of 14 and lewdness with a minor charges, along with an escape charge.

Woodard was arrested and brought to the sexual assault investigations office early Thursday. He was shackled at the wrist and ankle to a large U-shaped metal pipe bolted to the concrete floor in an interview room, Sgt. Christopher Darcy said.

Two detectives left him cuffed in the room while they filled out paperwork to take him to jail. Woodard is accused of pulling the metal pipe from the floor, slipping the handcuffs off the pipe, leaving the unlocked interview room and running out an emergency exit, police said.

More than 20 officers started searching for Woodard. He was found about 7 a.m. hiding behind a Dumpster in the parking lot of a convenience store at Charleston Boulevard and Rancho Drive, police said.
