Murderer sentenced to prison

Friday, July 26, 2002 | 10 a.m.

A 35-year-old Las Vegas man who admitted shooting a Henderson woman to death was sentenced to 20 years to life in prison Thursday.

James Turner Jr. declined to make a statement before District Judge Donald Mosley sentenced him in the July 2001 death of Miranda Johnson, 21.

Authorities say Turner shot Johnson to death as she was holding her infant son in her arms because he was upset her husband, Edward Wiggins, refused to sign with his rap music recording label.

Johnson's baby was found on the floor by police, unharmed and sleeping.

Turner pleaded guilty to first-degree murder in the middle of his trial in June in order to avoid the death penalty.
