Letter: Don’t downplay role of religion

Thursday, July 25, 2002 | 9:08 a.m.

In a July 15 letter, Teresa Harris took exception to a letter by Robin Joyce, who defends "under God" in the Pledge of Allegiance.

Harris says this country is based on the Constitution, not Judeo-Christian values. What Harris is probably not aware of is that the Constitution came close to not being written, due to disagreements by the writers. They were preparing to go their respective ways.

Benjamin Franklin then addressed the writers. "Gentlemen, we must seek the guidance of providence to do this work." After prayers, the Constitution was written.

So I would suggest to Harris or anyone else who still cares to say the pledge, but who doesn't include the words "under God," simply don't say "under God," even though most Americans will!
