Savvy wine buys: ‘98 Iron Horse Wedding Cuvee Sparkling Wine

Wednesday, July 24, 2002 | 8:20 a.m.

Forrest Tanzer is one of the pioneer winemakers in California's lush, beautiful Sonoma County, which is emerging slowly from Napa's shadow, and becoming a force not only in winemaking, but in tourism and gastronomy as well. Iron Horse has long been one of the leading Sonoma County wine houses, and this gorgeous sparkling wine shows why. It's a Blanc de Noir composed of 75 percent Pinot Noir and only 25 percent Chardonnay, aged two-plus years on the yeast in the bottle. Creamy and vigorous, it gives most French champagnes a real run for the money.

Available at International Wine, $26.99.
