Letter: Let voters decide who is qualified

Wednesday, July 24, 2002 | 8:46 a.m.

I would like to respond to your editorial concerning my qualifications for the office of public administrator. You claim, "There is no way that ... at this early stage in her life (she) can take on the complex job ..."

Jared Shafer, the current public administrator, said none of the 12 candidates for this office will "have a clue what is going on." All the candidates must then learn from scratch. Being 18, as I am, may be of great benefit.

You say the public administrator should be legally required to "have considerable knowledge of finances." There are no "knowledge" requirements for governor. Are you saying the voters cannot choose who is qualified?

The public administrator of Nye County, Robert Dyer (58), was charged with two counts of felony theft in 1999 for stealing from estates. Did his age make him do his job right?

Your comment, "We don't want to discourage young people from being more politically active ..." is a blatant lie. Your proposal would keep young people from having our voices heard as candidates while still paying taxes and living under the laws that often hurt the rights of young people.

Stop being hypocritical and let Clark County voters decide if we young people are qualified. We far-right candidates want to give voters more choices. If you think I'm too young for the job, simply don't vote for me. What ever happened to the far-left looking out for the rights of young people? Did all you Berkeley grads get old?
