Letter: Columnist’s views on Islam are distorted
Tuesday, July 23, 2002 | 8:41 a.m.
This letter is in response to Nicholas Kristof's July 12 column, "Avoid prejudice against Islam":
I realize that columnists have to watch what they write about lately, but I wonder what a writer could be thinking when he states that it is "disputable that it's reasonable to worry about the implications of the spread of Islam for the status of women and for the genital mutilation of girls."
There have been books and documentaries on the issue that are grisly and disgusting enough to allow me to avoid being graphic at this juncture, but when mentioning the removal of body parts for "any" reason, or in this case, no reason, what more needs to be said?
How can anyone dispute that the Islamic religion is simply evil?
